ParticipantWell, here we are!
Gill here, kicking off the chat. I’m in Gloucestershire this morning, it’s raining and pretty cold and I can’t wait to go off on my holidays on Friday. In the meantime, I’m tieing up a few loose ends, following through on our meeting the other night and welcoming those of you who have decided to take the plunge and join the group!
Usually, having committed to the training, there’s some excitement and an eagerness to get on with it! I am keen to capitalise on that motivation and so offer a few ideas to consider in the way of preparation. None of this is essential, but if you’d like to have a little warm up, then here goes…
• You may like to begin planning an entry (or several!) to a local show. Have a look at a few schedules (sometimes available online or in local information centres, Parish Council Offices and libraries) Read the rules carefully and perhaps refer to advice in On with the Show to interpret them.
• Consider doing a “personal skills audit” to identify any gaps in your knowledge and experience. Whilst we can’t be experts in everything, the simple process of having a go at something is quite enlightening and very beneficial when it comes to assessing the level of difficulty of a project. If there’s a technique you’ve always fancied giving a try, now could be a good time, for once the course begins you could find your time becomes more precious.
• Have a look at some magazines and online sources to see “what’s hot” and on trend right now. Whilst the show schedules have probably already been set for this year, the entrants might be looking for ideas around now and it’s surprising how often something familiar pops up on a show bench. You might like to take advantage of the “free for 30 days” offer at Creativebug – Craft Classes & Workshops – What will you make today? and skim through the wealth of ideas on there, too.Don’t forget to take photos, make a few notes and record your thoughts about the process and the product. Even better, share them here so we can all see, be inspired to have a go ourselves and most importantly, admire and be impressed by your work!!

This is an experiment. Can I post a picture? Well, yes. I clicked “IMG” on the menu above, then copied and pasted the url of the photo I wanted to share.
*note* you may like to edit your photo to reduce the file size before sharing here please. I use the (free) Snapseed app on my phone to make the file smaller and to tweak and crop the photo if needed.
